We offer a special Spanish program for teenagers. They are especially encouraged to attend Irazu during their Christmas, Easter and summer
breaks.
We believe the level of proficiency obtained is directly related to the degree and quality of contact they have with the people of Costa Rica.
The program is designed to provide an intensive immersion experience. Classes incorporate all aspects of lenguage acquisition-grammar, conversation, reading, writing, general comprehension and idiomatic expressions.
Our teen program includes a variety of fun chaperoned adventure and volunteer activities which will immerse teen students in the culture and expose them to the amazing natural life in Costa Rica.
Prior to being accepted in the program each student must sign a contract in which they promise to accept the rules of behavior as stipulated for a minor travelling without adult supervision.
Summer Camp dates: This program begins from June 2 and runs through August 22. Students can take one or more weekly segments as they desire. We suggest a minimum of two weeks or classes. Upon the completion of classes Irazu will award a certifcate indicating the number of hours of course work completed and the level obtained.
Safety: Student safety is our number one priority. Students are not permitted to go out alone. They are accompanied by qualified chaperones or their host families at all times to ensure their safety. These individuals will assist them with everything they need.
The teen Coordinator: This person will be available 24 hours per day. He or she will maintain permanent contact will the students and their host families in order to know their whereabouts at all times. The teen coordinator also maintains contact with the student’s parent/chaperone to report on their child in general, and specifically how s/he is advancing with classes and/or adapting to the new culture.
Drinking alcohol or smoking: Participating students are not allowed to consume alcohol or smoke at any point during their stay nor are students allowed to go out by themselves at any time, day or night. When students are not with the chaperones, they stay with their host family.
Calling parents: Students can call the USA collect or they can use calling cards. We also have international calling cards at reasonable prices.
Waiver: Student behavior and liability contracts must be signed by both student and legal guardian, and handed in the first Monday of their program.
Accomodations: Students will stay with their host families during the week. Each home includes all the necessities: private rooms, potable and hot water, vegetarian food if the student is a vegetarian, among others. Each student is matched with an appropriate family. The families take their responsibility to maintain a tranquil environment seriously. They will be involved in the care of the teens and will help enforce the curfew. On weekend and overnight tours students will stay in hotels and share rooms with the same gender and similar aged students. They will be supervised by chaperones.
Health insurance: Students should obtain travelers health insurance from their country of origin. In case of illness their family will be notified immediately.
Activities: The course includes seminars covering Costa Rican cuisine, art, customs and dance. Students will take excursions to cinemas, theaters, movies, shopping, museums, and nearby city centers.
